Medicare Telehealth Coverage Reduced or Even Eliminated – What You Need to Know
During the time that Covid 19 was most active, the government determined that many telephone-based medical services would be covered by Medicare. Medicare recipients were able to speak on the phone to practitioners such as primary care physicians and nurse practitioners, physical and occupational therapists, audiologists and the like, before circumstance reached a crisis point.
Telehealth services were often a lifeline for seniors at home and – perhaps especially – for those who live some distance from care or are disabled. Unfortunately for many people, as of October 1, 2025, coverage for telehealth services have been significantly reduced or eliminated altogether.
Sorting through the changes can be confusing. Accessing much needed medical guidance and care can be far more difficult especially for seniors who have difficulty getting to doctors, physical therapists, and other providers.
Telehealth services from some providers are still allowed under the new Medicare rules for example:
- Behavioral and mental health sessions
- Monthly home dialysis consultations in some cases
- Help with diabetes management
People who live at a distance from care providers may be significantly more affected than those for whom medical care is more convenient. Likewise, those who are disabled may face a greater challenge to get the services they need. Patients, family members and other caregivers may struggle to arrange for care and transportation to care providers in the absence of telehealth services.
The gaps in coverage may result in delays in care or even a lack of care. Medical and mobility conditions may worsen. Preventable emergency room care and/or repeated hospitalizations may be the result. These can take a terrible physical, emotional, and financial toll on patients and caregivers.
